Stockholm Christmas Markets 2026
Stockholm's Christmas markets in 2026: dates, opening hours, admission and transport for Gamla Stan, Skansen, the Royal Stables, Sigtuna and more, and which one fits your trip.
If you have time for just one Stockholm Christmas market, make it Stortorget in Gamla Stan. Its red wooden stalls stand among the Old Town’s colourful merchant houses, entry is free, and you can walk on to the waterfront afterwards. If you want Swedish Christmas traditions more than shopping, Skansen’s market makes the better half-day out. And for a small-town Advent atmosphere, Sigtuna is worth the journey on one of its four market Sundays.
Check Availability
Stockholm has no single huge Christmas market that stays open into January. Instead there is one central market that opens every day, bigger weekend events, craft fairs and smaller markets outside the city. The dates matter: some of the most appealing markets happen once, or over a single weekend.
This guide covers the 2026 Christmas season: which markets are free, which need a ticket, how to get there and how to fit them into a winter sightseeing day. We checked every date on 2 November 2026; use the official links for last-minute changes.
Quick answer: The Old Town market on Stortorget is expected to open on 21 or 22 November and run to 23 December 2026; the organiser had not posted 2026 dates when we checked, so confirm before you travel for opening weekend. Skansen runs Friday to Sunday, 27 November to 20 December. Sigtuna holds its market on Sundays 29 November and 6, 13 and 20 December. Pick by your dates, then by whether you want shopping, traditions or a day trip.

Gamla Stan dates for 2026: the market organiser’s website still showed last year’s dates (22 November to 23 December 2025) when we checked on 2 November. The local newspaper Mitt i reported on 27 October 2026 that the market would run from 21 November to 23 December, while Visit Sweden lists 22 November to 23 December 2026. Either way, the stalls should be up from the weekend of 21–22 November until 23 December. If you are coming for opening day, check the organiser’s site the week before. The hours in the table are the 2025 hours; expect similar times this year.
Prices are in Swedish kronor (SEK). Markets, vendors, opening times and activities can change. “Free” means no entry charge to the market, not free food, gifts or transport.
1. Stortorget Christmas Market: the pick on a first visit to Stockholm
Location: Stortorget, Gamla Stan (Old Town)
2026 dates: expected from 21 or 22 November to 23 December; check the opening date
Admission: free
Allow: 30–60 minutes for the market, longer for the Old Town around it
Stortorget is the Stockholm Christmas market most visitors picture: dark-red wooden booths, a cobbled square and the tall, narrow façades of the Old Town behind the stalls. It is compact, nothing like a sprawling German Christmas market, and that is part of its appeal. Buy a hot drink, look at handmade gifts, then carry on through some of Stockholm’s oldest streets without planning a special trip.
The market traces its modern history to 1837, and the local society Stockholms-Gillet has long kept the tradition going. Expect traditional sweets, ceramics, candles, crafts, sausages and other Swedish specialities, though the vendors change from year to year. The square photographs best when the stall lights start to glow against the early-afternoon sky.
When to go
For shopping, go on a weekday soon after opening, when you can see the goods without squeezing through crowds. For photographs and atmosphere, arrive in the late afternoon or early evening once the lights show. December gets dark early, so you do not need to stay out late to see the stalls lit up.
The trade-off: the atmospheric hours are also the busiest. If you dislike crowds, shop early and come back for a short look after dark.
How to get there
Take the metro to Gamla stan station and walk uphill through the Old Town to Stortorget. From central Stockholm you can also walk across the bridges, depending on where you are staying. The approach has cobblestones and some slopes, so wear shoes with good grip when it is wet or icy.
To understand the buildings and Swedish Christmas customs as well as browse, pair the market with a guided walk. The two-hour Gamla Stan walk with a local guide costs from $16 and is rated 4.7/5 from 2,676 reviews; for a Christmas theme, the Stockholm Christmas Tour and Food Tasting Experience on Viator meets on Stortorget itself (from $55, 4.4/5 from only 17 reviews).
Check dates: Stortorget’s official Christmas market website.
2. Skansen Christmas Market: Swedish traditions, and the pick for families
Location: Bollnästorget inside Skansen, Djurgården
2026 dates: 27–29 November; 4–6, 11–13 and 18–20 December
Hours: Friday–Saturday 10:00–17:00; Sunday 10:00–16:00
Admission: a valid Skansen ticket
Allow: 3–5 hours if you also explore the museum
Skansen is an open-air museum of Swedish buildings and traditions, so the market comes with seasonal decorations, performances and activities around it. Its Christmas market began in 1903. Today’s stalls sell local crafts, seasonal food, candles and gifts, and the historic houses around them show what a Swedish Christmas has looked and felt like over time.
Choose Skansen for a proper Christmas outing or if you are travelling with children. It also suits anyone who wants more than shopping: explore the decorated farmsteads and town quarter, catch the music when it is scheduled, try the festive food and spend the rest of the day on Djurgården.
Exact 2026 opening days
- November: Friday 27 (10:00–17:00), Saturday 28 (10:00–17:00), Sunday 29 (10:00–16:00).
- December: Friday to Sunday on 4–6, 11–13 and 18–20 December. Fridays and Saturdays close at 17:00; Sundays at 16:00.
The market does not run every day in December. Skansen itself opens on days without market stalls, and the market does not continue to Christmas Eve or Christmas Day: the last market day is Sunday 20 December 2026.
Tickets and what they include
You pay for entry to Skansen, not for a separate market ticket. Ticket prices vary by date and are lowest online. Children aged 0–15 go free, but each child needs a free ticket, booked in advance or added to an adult ticket, and under-13s must come with an adult. Some extras inside Skansen cost more. Skansen is also among the attractions included in the Stockholm Pass (from $108, 4.1/5 from 2,528 reviews), which pays off only if you visit several paid sights a day.
If you only want a cup of glögg beside a stall, the ticket is poor value. For a half-day of museum, traditions, performances and Christmas shopping, it is easier to justify.
How to get there
Take tram 7 from the city centre towards Djurgården, or bus 67 to Skansen. You can also use the Djurgården ferry if it suits your route and that day’s timetable. Skansen’s address is Djurgårdsslätten 49; the museum has more than one entrance, so check which one your ticket shows. Our guide to Stockholm’s ferries covers the Djurgården boat.

3. Kungsträdgården Christmas Market: unusual gifts in the city centre
Location: Kungsträdgården, central Stockholm
2026 date: Saturday 28 November
Hours: 11:00–16:00
Allow: 30–60 minutes
Unlike the historic markets, the Kungsträdgården Christmas market showcases products made or sold by young entrepreneurs and school companies. You might find accessories, design pieces, food, small gifts and ideas you would not see at a heritage market.
This is a one-day event, not a market that runs all December. If you are in Stockholm on 28 November, it is a good stop between sights. If your trip is a week later, go to Gamla Stan or Skansen instead.
Kungsträdgården sits in the centre, beside Kungsträdgården metro station and a short walk from the waterfront and the main shopping streets.
Check: Visit Stockholm’s 2026 Kungsträdgården market listing.
4. Royal Stables Christmas Market: handmade gifts in a royal venue
Location: Hovstallet, Väpnargatan 1, Östermalm
2026 dates and hours: Friday 4 December, 11:00–19:00; Saturday 5 December, 10:00–18:00; Sunday 6 December, 10:00–17:00
Admission: SEK 120 per person; children under 12 free with an adult
Allow: 1–2 hours
The Royal Stables (Hovstallet) are one of Stockholm’s more unusual Christmas market venues. Around 70 craftspeople sell handmade goods and seasonal treats in the stables of the Swedish royal household, home to the horses used in ceremonial royal processions.
For quality crafts over mass-market souvenirs, this is an excellent choice: you browse gifts and see part of the stables in one visit. The organiser notes that the horses have rest periods, though, so you cannot count on seeing them at every hour of the market.
Tickets are sold on site, according to the official listing. Dogs are allowed, but the organiser warns the setting can stress them. If steps or upper floors are difficult for you, check the Royal Stables’ accessibility information first.
Official information: Royal Palaces: Christmas Market at the Royal Stables.
5. Sigtuna Christmas Market: the best Christmas day trip from Stockholm
Location: Stora torget, Stora gatan and the streets around them, Sigtuna
2026 market dates: Sundays 29 November, 6 December, 13 December and 20 December
Hours: 11:00–16:00 on each market Sunday
Admission: the organiser lists no ticket; the stalls line the town’s public streets
Allow: at least half a day including travel
Sigtuna is a good alternative if you have already seen central Stockholm or want a quieter historic setting. Its colourful low buildings and narrow streets feel very different from the capital. On market Sundays the stalls spread beyond the main square to Stora gatan, the waterfront promenade and the area outside the Sigtuna museum, with local food, crafts, music and children’s activities. The programme changes from one Sunday to the next.
Sigtuna is not next door to Stockholm, so don’t try to fit it into a 45-minute break. Take a commuter train towards Märsta and change to a local bus to Sigtuna. Allow about an hour or more each way, depending on connections, and check the journey in the SL journey planner.
Who should go: couples after a slower festive day, families happy to travel, and repeat visitors who want somewhere new. Who should skip it: anyone with only a few hours in Stockholm, or anyone visiting on a weekday, as the market is Sunday-only.
Official information: Destination Sigtuna: Christmas Market 2026.
6. Taxinge Castle Christmas Fair: before the main season begins
Location: Taxinge-Näsby Castle, outside Nykvarn
2026 dates: 13–15 November and 19–22 November
Admission: SEK 100 on weekdays, SEK 120 at weekends; children up to 12 go free with an adult, according to the castle’s event page
Allow: a full excursion, not a quick city visit
If you are in Stockholm before Skansen and most Advent markets open, Taxinge’s Christmas fair is one of the better early options. The castle lists more than 100 craftspeople selling handmade gifts in a countryside setting, which makes it worth the trip if traditional crafts are a main reason for your visit.
The castle is known for its cakes and afternoon tea, but on the seven fair days you pay the entry charge to reach the grounds even if you only want the café. Check the dining options and entry terms beforehand.
Opening hours: 13–14 November 10:00–18:00, 15 November 10:00–16:00; 19 November 11:00–18:00, 20–21 November 10:00–18:00, 22 November 10:00–16:00.
Taxinge is well outside central Stockholm. Without a car, or a transport plan worked out in advance, it is a poor fit for a short city break.
Official information: Taxinge Castle: Christmas Fair 2026.
7. Two smaller markets for special interests
Tyresö Handelsträdgård: a greenhouse market
On 5–6 and 12–13 December 2026, Tyresö Handelsträdgård near Tyresö Castle holds a Christmas market inside a greenhouse. Plants, decorations, handicrafts and a roof over your head make it a useful choice when the weather turns. Check the daily hours and admission with the organiser before you go; this is not an inner-city stop.
Visit Stockholm: Tyresö Christmas Markets.
Julverket: contemporary art and design
Julverket in Slakthusområdet is listed for 12–13 December 2026, with more than 50 artists and makers, food and festive music. Go if you would prefer illustrations, modern ceramics or design-led gifts to traditional wooden decorations. Check the times and admission in advance.
Visit Stockholm: Julverket Christmas Art Market.
Which Stockholm Christmas market should you choose?
| Your situation | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First time in Stockholm, a couple of hours free | Stortorget | Central, atmospheric and free; easy to pair with Old Town sightseeing |
| Travelling with children, half a day free | Skansen | Market plus Swedish history and activities |
| After beautiful crafts in a special setting | Royal Stables | Quality handmade goods, a royal venue, three days only |
| In Stockholm on 28 November | Kungsträdgården + Stortorget | Two different markets in one central day |
| Visiting on an Advent Sunday, happy to travel | Sigtuna | Traditional Christmas atmosphere outside the capital |
| Visiting before 21 November | Taxinge Castle | One of the earliest Christmas fairs |
| Shopping for art or design | Julverket | Contemporary makers, not a heritage market |
| Escaping cold wind and rain | Tyresö greenhouse market | Under cover, on its event days |
Our recommendation: choose one main Christmas experience and pair it with a guided walk, a museum or a festive meal; four markets in a rush is too many. Stortorget plus Skansen makes a sensible two-market day on any Friday, Saturday or Sunday between 27 November and 20 December, while Sigtuna needs a half-day of its own.
A one-day Stockholm Christmas market itinerary
The easiest day joins Gamla Stan and Djurgården and skips the distant countryside markets.
10:00–12:30: start at Skansen
Visit the market while there is daylight for the historic buildings and the stalls. Look round the festive displays and plan a warm drink or an indoor break. This plan works on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday between 27 November and 20 December 2026.
12:30–14:00: lunch and back into the city
Return from Djurgården by tram 7, the bus or a ferry. Check that day’s ferry timetable before counting on a departure. Stop at another sight on the way if you prefer a slower day.
14:00–16:00: Gamla Stan and Stortorget
Wander the Old Town lanes, stop at Stortorget and leave time for crafts, snacks and photos. By late afternoon the lights take over the scene. If you want the history explained, a guided Gamla Stan walk or the Christmas food-tasting walk fits this slot; check the departure time before you build the day around it.
After 16:00: lights, dinner or an evening tour
Finish with an evening walk through the lit-up streets, a meal or a booked festive experience. For more bookable ideas, see our guide to the best Stockholm winter tours.
On a weekday, when Skansen’s market is closed: swap Skansen for a museum such as the Vasa Museum (the Vasa and Vrak combo ticket costs from $33, rated 4.7/5 from 3,713 reviews), then go to Stortorget later. You still get a good winter day without arriving at empty market booths.
What to eat and buy at Stockholm Christmas markets
Swedish Christmas markets are about more than decorations. Look out for these seasonal foods and crafts; every stall sets its own menu and prices.
- Glögg: warm spiced drink, with or without alcohol. Ask before ordering if you have a preference.
- Pepparkakor: crisp, spiced gingerbread biscuits, the classic partner to glögg.
- Lussekatter: soft saffron buns tied to Lucia and the Advent season.
- Roasted almonds: an easy snack between stalls.
- Swedish cheeses, sausages and preserved foods: good gifts where travel and customs rules let you take them home.
- Handmade candles, textiles, ceramics and wooden objects: often a better memento than imported souvenirs.
Practical advice: Sweden is very card-friendly. Skansen says its entrances and most of its vendors are cashless, so bring a working card or a phone payment method. If you are visiting from abroad, check your card’s foreign-transaction fees. Prices vary by stall, so a small budget for snacks and gifts is more use than hunting for a price list.
Do you need to book Christmas markets in advance?
Not for the free public markets. Stortorget, Sigtuna and the one-day Kungsträdgården event need no timed entry; you arrive during the published hours and walk in.
For Skansen, buy your entrance ticket for the day you are going, and add a free ticket for each child. The Royal Stables sell tickets on site, according to the event listing, and the Taxinge fair has its own admission rules. Check the organiser’s terms if your trip depends on a particular date.
Guided tours, a Christmas dinner, a private experience or a festive cruise are different: places can be limited, especially on December weekends. Book a time you can actually make, and read the cancellation terms.
For bookable winter experiences beyond the markets, compare our Stockholm winter tour options. For a guided Christmas walk with tastings, check the Viator listing’s dates and inclusions.
Christmas markets on 24, 25 and 26 December
This catches out some visitors. Most traditional Christmas markets finish before Christmas itself. Stortorget runs until 23 December, Skansen’s last market day is 20 December, and the Royal Stables, Sigtuna and the smaller fairs end earlier still.
Stockholm is still good to visit over Christmas, but don’t plan a Christmas-market afternoon on 24 December. Christmas Eve is the main celebration in Sweden, and attractions, transport, restaurants and shops can run reduced hours. If you arrive between 24 and 26 December, plan museums, walks and meals one by one using their confirmed holiday hours.
The same goes for January 2027: no main Stockholm Christmas market runs into January, even if some decorations stay up.
How cold is Stockholm during the Christmas markets?
Expect cold, often damp weather, with snow, slush, wind, rain or icy pavements all possible. A white Christmas is not guaranteed. Because you stand still while browsing outdoor stalls, a market feels colder than a short walk between sights.
Wear a warm coat, layers, a hat, gloves and shoes with grippy soles; waterproof footwear helps when the pavements are wet. Carry a small bag for purchases so your hands are free on the cobblestones. With children, plan indoor warm-up breaks instead of hours outdoors.
For photographers, a twilight visit is lovely, but bring a lens cloth for condensation and keep your hands warm. To avoid the busiest times, take your main photos on a quiet weekday, not at peak Advent weekend hours.
November or December for Stockholm’s Christmas markets?
December is the safer choice if the markets are the main reason for your trip. The first three weekends of December overlap Stortorget, Skansen and the one-off events, so you have more chances to combine markets with festive performances or a guided evening walk.
Late November still works, especially 27–29 November 2026, when Skansen opens and the first Advent weekend begins. Come too early in November and you may find only a few specialist fairs outside the city. For an early trip, plan around Taxinge’s 13–15 and 19–22 November dates instead of expecting the city markets to be open.

Frequently asked questions
When do Stockholm Christmas markets start in 2026?
The earliest fair in this guide is Taxinge Castle on 13 November 2026. The Stortorget market is expected to open on 21 or 22 November; the organiser had not updated its website from 2025 when we checked on 2 November. Skansen opens on 27 November.
When does the Gamla Stan Christmas market open in 2026?
The local newspaper Mitt i reported 21 November to 23 December 2026, and Visit Sweden lists 22 November to 23 December. The organiser’s own site still showed last year’s dates on 2 November. If you are travelling for opening weekend, check Stortorget’s organiser shortly before you go.
Is the Gamla Stan Christmas market free?
Yes. Stortorget is a public square, and there is no entry charge to walk through the market. Food, drinks, gifts and guided walks cost extra.
Is Skansen Christmas market free?
No. The market is inside the ticketed open-air museum, so you need a Skansen ticket for that day. Children aged 0–15 go free, but each needs a free ticket.
Which Christmas market is best for children?
Skansen has the most to do on a longer outing. Sigtuna is fun on an Advent Sunday if your family doesn’t mind the journey. Stortorget is easy for a short stop but gets crowded at busy times.
Are there Christmas markets in Stockholm on weekdays?
Stortorget is the main central market expected to open every day until 23 December. Skansen’s market is Friday to Sunday only, and the Royal Stables and Sigtuna markets keep their own short schedules.
Do the Christmas markets have snow?
They might, but snow is not guaranteed. The lights and decorations are there whether the weather is snowy, rainy or just cold.
Can you visit Skansen and Stortorget on the same day?
Yes. On a Friday, Saturday or Sunday when Skansen’s market is open, start at Skansen and head to Gamla Stan in the afternoon. Leave enough time for the journey, food and the museum; neither works as a five-minute photo stop.
Which market is best for buying handmade gifts?
The Royal Stables for crafts, Skansen for traditional Swedish items and Julverket for contemporary art and design. Stortorget is a good all-rounder, though the selection depends on the year’s vendors.
Are Stockholm Christmas markets open on Christmas Day?
No. The main traditional markets in this guide finish before 25 December. An attraction that opens at Christmas does not mean its market stalls are still trading.
Final recommendation
For most visitors: Stortorget for classic scenery and convenience, Skansen for a fuller Swedish Christmas, and Sigtuna for a whole Advent-Sunday escape. Add the Royal Stables if you are in town on 4–6 December and want distinctive handmade gifts. The one-off and early-season fairs are worth a look too, once you have checked their dates.
To have Swedish Christmas traditions explained as you explore the Old Town, book the Gamla Stan walk with a local guide: two hours from $16, rated 4.7/5 from 2,676 reviews, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.
