Stockholm in December 2026

Stockholm in December 2026: Christmas markets, the winter boat tour, Nobel Week Lights, weather, daylight, Christmas opening hours and a 3-day itinerary that works with short days.

Updated November 2026

Stockholm is one of the most atmospheric European capitals to visit in December, but it needs a different plan from a summer city break. You get about six hours of daylight around the winter solstice, the waterfront can be icy and windy, and the Christmas markets close before Christmas itself. In return you get lit-up Old Town streets, Swedish Christmas traditions, excellent museums, seasonal cruises and a city that looks completely different after dark.

If this is your first December visit, spend the daylight hours on a guided walk, a waterfront boat trip or Djurgården, then use the early evening for Christmas lights, a museum or a seasonal dinner. December is a poor month for long island-hopping trips, but a good one for compact guided tours and festive traditions.

This guide covers December 2026: event dates, weather and snow, the winter tours, opening hours around Christmas, and itineraries that work with short days. Dates were checked on 1 November 2026. Reconfirm schedules before you pay, particularly if you are travelling 24–26 December.

Quick answer: For a classic December trip, aim for 5–13 December 2026 if you want the Christmas markets and the free Nobel Week Lights festival. The Skansen Christmas Market runs Friday to Sunday from 27 November to 20 December, and the city-centre Christmas lights run 14 November 2026–16 January 2027. December temperatures are typically near -1°C to 3°C, daylight is roughly six to six and a half hours, and snow is not guaranteed. Combine Gamla Stan, one winter boat tour, a major museum and a festive evening activity instead of trying to fit in every attraction.

What is Stockholm like in December?

December in Stockholm is not constant darkness, but the day feels compressed. A sightseeing morning starts with blue-grey light over the water, and by mid-afternoon the sun has gone. So a three-day itinerary should not be three full days of outdoor sightseeing. Plan each day in blocks: one outdoor activity while it is light, one substantial indoor stop, and one evening activity.

The darkness can be part of the appeal. A market on Stortorget, decorated streets in Norrmalm, reflections on the water or a light-art installation can be more memorable after sunset than on a bright afternoon. Cafés, museums and warm boat cabins make it easy to alternate time outside with breaks.

The atmosphere changes across the month:

  • 1–4 December: Christmas lights are on, the markets have begun, and the winter sightseeing boat starts sailing. Fewer festivals overlap than later in the month.
  • 5–13 December: Nobel Week Lights, Advent markets and Lucia events all fall in this window. It is my preferred window for travellers interested in local culture and photography.
  • 14–20 December: Strong pre-Christmas atmosphere, with Skansen’s final market weekend on 18–20 December. Book festive dining early.
  • 21–23 December: The city is still decorated, but the major markets are winding down. Do not expect every weekend-only attraction to be open.
  • 24–26 December: A much quieter period with special opening hours. Plan each day around confirmed venues and restaurant reservations.
  • 27–31 December: Regular sightseeing returns, the Christmas lights stay on, and New Year’s Eve brings its own set of booking decisions.

Stockholm weather in December: how cold does it get?

The World Meteorological Organization lists Stockholm’s December average daily high at 2.5°C (36.5°F) and average daily low at -1.2°C (29.8°F), based on 1991–2020 climate normals. Average precipitation is about 48 mm for the month, rain and snow together. These are long-term averages, not a forecast for December 2026.

Wind, damp air and standing still matter more than the thermometer. A temperature close to zero feels much colder on a boat deck or a waterfront bridge than on a sheltered Old Town street. Cobblestones also turn slippery when moisture freezes.

Will there be snow in Stockholm in December 2026?

Snow is possible, not guaranteed. Stockholm can have white streets in December, but it can also be rainy or largely snow-free during a short visit. If your holiday depends on snowy forests, deep snow or frozen lakes, central Stockholm in early December is a risky bet.

For a December weekend, plan things that work in cold, rain or snow: museums, walking tours with warm breaks, festive food, the Christmas markets and enclosed sightseeing cruises. Treat snow as a bonus for photographs.

What to pack for Stockholm in December

You will move between heated buildings and cold, often windy streets, so layers help more than the warmest possible coat.

  • Warm, weather-resistant outer layer, preferably with a hood.
  • Thermal or wool base layer for long walks or outdoor tours.
  • Mid-layer such as fleece or wool that can come off indoors.
  • Water-resistant boots with good grip for Gamla Stan’s cobbles and icy pavements.
  • Hat, scarf and gloves; touchscreen-compatible gloves help with maps and photos.
  • Thick socks, plus a spare pair if you expect wet weather.
  • Small day bag for an extra layer, water and a compact umbrella if you like one.

For a boat or kayaking trip, follow the operator’s clothing instructions. A winter-kayaking company may supply a drysuit but expect you to bring your own thermal layers underneath.

Times are local to Stockholm (CET), rounded to the nearest minute. Source: timeanddate.com.

9:00 am–2:00 pm: Waterfront photography, an open-air museum or a city boat tour. If a tour leaves at 1:45 pm, much of it may be in twilight or after sunset.

2:00–5:00 pm: Fika, museum visits and the first Christmas-light photographs. Blue hour arrives earlier than first-time visitors expect.

5:00–9:00 pm: Christmas lights, food tours, concerts and dinners. You do not need to fill every hour outdoors.

On a two- or three-day trip, keep the brightest part of each day for one activity that needs daylight. Many of Stockholm’s best museums work just as well after dark, as long as they are open.

12 best things to do in Stockholm in December 2026

1. Explore the Christmas market at Stortorget, Gamla Stan

Best for: First-time visitors, Christmas atmosphere, easy sightseeing combinations
Time needed: 30–60 minutes at the market; longer for the Old Town
Cost: Free entry; purchases extra

Red market stalls among the colourful Old Town façades of Stortorget make the classic Stockholm Christmas picture. Look for Swedish sweets, handicrafts, seasonal treats and small gifts, then walk through the nearby lanes towards the water. The market is charming but compact, so treat it as part of a wider Gamla Stan visit, not a whole day out.

The market is expected to open on 21 or 22 November and run to 23 December 2026. The organiser’s website still showed the 2025 season in early November, so if you are travelling for opening weekend, check Stortorget’s market organiser first.

Make it better: Take a guided Old Town walk first, then come back to the stalls on your own to shop and photograph the square. The two-hour Gamla Stan walk with a local guide costs from $16 and is rated 4.7/5 from 2,681 reviews. You will understand more of the streets and buildings than you would from browsing alone.

For a full market comparison and opening dates, see our Stockholm Christmas Markets 2026 guide.

2. Visit Skansen’s Christmas market and seasonal displays

Best for: Swedish customs, children, crafts and a half-day outing
Market dates: Fridays–Sundays, 27 November–20 December 2026
Time needed: 3–5 hours if you explore the open-air museum

Skansen, on Djurgården, turns its Christmas market into a wider look at Swedish traditions. Expect stalls with seasonal food and crafts, historic buildings, decorations and scheduled festive activities. Choose it over Stortorget if you want to learn about Swedish Christmas, not just see a pretty square.

The December market days are 4–6, 11–13 and 18–20 December. Fridays and Saturdays run 10:00–17:00; Sundays 10:00–16:00. Skansen itself opens on other days too, but the market stalls do not run daily.

You enter through Skansen’s ticketed museum. Children aged 0–15 are listed as free, although you may still need to book a free ticket. Some concerts and activities cost extra.

Official dates and booking: Skansen Christmas market, and Skansen admission and opening hours. Skansen sells its tickets on its own website; we found no GetYourGuide listing for them.

3. See Nobel Week Lights, 5–13 December

Best for: Free evening sightseeing, unusual photographs, art and culture
2026 dates: 5–13 December
Display hours: Generally 16:00–22:00
Admission: Free

Nobel Week Lights fills public spaces with illuminated works inspired by the Nobel Prize. The 2026 installations are in central Stockholm and Tensta, so not every artwork sits on one short walk. Use the official map and programme to plan a sensible route.

The organiser says the 2026 programme of activities and guided tours is due on 16 November, so specific artworks and routes may change. One evening with two to four well-placed installations is usually more enjoyable than trying to see them all.

It suits budget travellers well: the artworks cost nothing, and they give you something to do in the dark hours after a daytime tour or museum.

Tip: Combine a central light-art route with dinner in Norrmalm or Kungsholmen. Allow extra time for crossings and crowds, and bring gloves if you will be holding a camera or phone for long.

4. Walk through the official Stockholm Christmas lights

Best for: Free evening atmosphere, families and photography
2026–27 season: 14 November 2026–16 January 2027

The #Stockholmsjul display decorates more than 40 central streets and squares with festive light motifs. A self-guided loop around Kungsträdgården, Norrmalm and the nearby central streets is an easy, free way to enjoy December.

Unlike most Christmas markets, the lights stay on into January. That makes them a good fallback if you arrive after 23 December, when the market stalls have largely closed for the year.

For the current light map and dates, see Visit Stockholm’s #Stockholmsjul listing.

Should you book a Christmas walking tour? A themed guide adds stories about Swedish customs, local history and what the season means here. If you mainly want photographs, a self-guided route is fine.

Tour option: GetYourGuide has no Christmas walk in Stockholm this year. On Viator, the Stockholm Christmas Tour and Food Tasting Experience is a two-hour small-group walk with Swedish Christmas tastings that meets on Stortorget, listed from 20 November to 31 December 2026. It costs from $55 and is rated 4.4/5, but from only 17 reviews, so read the latest few before you book.

5. Take a Stockholm winter sightseeing boat tour

Best for: City views from the water, first-time visitors, compact itineraries
Published season: 1 December 2026–4 April 2027
Duration: 75 minutes
Price: SEK 410 direct, or Archipelago Winter Boat Tour with Guide from $41 on GetYourGuide (4.5/5 from 1,477 reviews)

The sea and islands shape Stockholm, and in December you can still see the city from the water without committing to a long, exposed archipelago trip.

Strömma’s Winter Boat Tour has live English and Swedish commentary, indoor and outdoor seating and a café on board. It leaves from Strömkajen, passes the waterfront and Royal Djurgården, and circles Fjäderholmarna without landing.

The operator lists daily departures at 10:30, 12:00 and 13:45. For bright scenery in December, I would choose 10:30 or noon. The later sailing can be moody and photogenic, but its last part may be in low light.

Important: The boat is an icebreaking vessel, but ice is broken only when the water has frozen, which depends on the weather. The operator also says the vessel is not wheelchair accessible and strollers are not allowed on board, although a stroller can be left secured on the quay.

For a closer comparison of winter cruises, see our Best Stockholm Winter Tours guide.

6. Book a Swedish Christmas buffet cruise (julbord)

Best for: A festive meal, couples, small groups and a memorable December evening
Typical duration: 2–3 hours
Starting prices: SEK 795 for lunch and SEK 995 for dinner

If you want one December splurge, a julbord cruise pairs a Swedish Christmas buffet with the winter archipelago. A julbord traditionally has a long run of cold and hot dishes, with festive breads, desserts and other specialities. The route, ship and serving style vary by departure.

Strömma’s 2026 Christmas dining cruises run from 24 November to 26 December 2026, at lunch and dinner, with a few sailings on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Strömma sells them direct on its own website. A standard sightseeing ticket does not include a meal: julbord cruises are a separate product.

Before booking: Check the departure quay, exactly what the meal includes, dietary options, the cancellation policy and whether your ship suits any mobility needs. The operator warns that its Christmas dining cruises are generally not wheelchair accessible.

Pick a lunch cruise if daylight views of the archipelago matter most. A dinner cruise is about the food, decorations and evening atmosphere; you will not see much of the islands.

7. Experience a Swedish Lucia celebration

Best for: Local culture, candlelit music and a distinctive Swedish tradition
Main festival date: 13 December
2026 Skansen programme: Events and concerts on 12–13 December

Lucia is one of Sweden’s best-known winter traditions: processions in white robes, candles or electric lights, and choral music. For visitors it can tell you more about Sweden than a shopping-focused market.

Skansen has announced Lucia celebrations for December 2026, with events on 12 and 13 December. Some concerts, such as those in Seglora Church, need separate tickets on top of normal admission. The Seglora Church concerts page lists performances at 11:00, 13:00, 14:30 and 16:00 on both days.

If Lucia matters to you, plan around a specific confirmed performance, not just 13 December. Admission rules, seating and capacity vary by venue, and for a popular procession you may need to arrive early.

8. Visit the Vasa Museum on a cold or rainy afternoon

Best for: First-time visitors, families with older children and history fans
Suggested time: 1.5–2 hours

The Vasa Museum is one of Stockholm’s best winter attractions because the weather makes no difference to it. Its almost complete 17th-century warship is dramatic enough to plan part of a day around.

For October–December 2026, adult admission is SEK 195, and visitors 18 and under get in free. Winter hours are 10:00–17:00 daily, with Wednesdays until 20:00. The museum is closed on 24 and 25 December and opens 10:00–15:00 on 31 December.

Official hours and admission: Vasa Museum. To add the nearby wreck museum, the Vasa Museum and Vrak Museum of Wrecks Combo Entry costs from $33 and is rated 4.7/5 from 3,721 reviews; for a guide, the Vasa Museum tour with entry ticket costs from $63 (4.9/5 from 839 reviews).

Visit in the late afternoon after a daylight walk or cruise, when the hours allow. If the weather is especially bad, make the museum the main event and add only a short Old Town walk.

9. Spend time on Djurgården: Nordic Museum or ABBA The Museum

Best for: Bad-weather alternatives, families, culture and music fans

Djurgården works well in December because several large attractions sit close together. Nordiska museet covers Nordic life and traditions, which fits a December trip well. ABBA The Museum is an interactive pop-music museum that appeals even if historic ships leave you cold.

ABBA The Museum opens 10:00–18:00 from 1 September to 23 December 2026, and 10:00–15:00 on 24 and 25 December, so you can plan it in advance if you are visiting over Christmas. Recheck your day before buying tickets. The ABBA The Museum Entrance Ticket costs from $28 and is rated 4.6/5 from 14,116 reviews.

Official details: ABBA The Museum prices and opening hours.

If you have time for only one indoor attraction, choose by interest instead of rushing through Vasa, Nordiska and ABBA in one afternoon. If your group’s interests differ, split up for a couple of hours and meet for fika afterwards.

10. Try winter kayaking with a guide

Best for: Active travellers looking for something unusual
Time needed: Often 2–4 hours depending on route and transfers

Winter kayaking is a real Stockholm activity, but it is nothing like casual summer kayak rental. Operators use specialist equipment, give safety briefings and choose routes around water and weather conditions.

The Winter Kayaking, Swedish Fika, and Hot Sauna trip near Vaxholm is listed from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027, with a drysuit, equipment, fika and a sauna. It costs from $132 and is rated 5.0/5 from 883 reviews. The paddle takes about three hours, plus the journey to the meeting point outside central Stockholm. Winter kayaking in the city centre is another option.

On a short visit, pick a city-centre route if it has space on your date. For a more outdoors-focused day, Vaxholm justifies the extra journey. Always check the minimum age, swimming ability, fitness requirements, cancellation terms and whether the sauna costs extra.

11. Go ice skating in Kungsträdgården

Best for: A short winter activity in the city centre
Cost: Free to skate; skate hire may cost extra

Kungsträdgården’s seasonal ice rink adds a classic winter activity to a sightseeing day. It is central and usually open in the colder months when conditions allow. It is also far simpler than skating on a natural lake, which needs much stricter ice-safety judgement.

Visit Stockholm’s rink listing describes it as free and open to the public in winter, weather permitting. Check that day’s rink opening and skate hire before you go; the rink is not ready just because the calendar says December.

Never skate on a natural lake because it looks frozen. Use a maintained rink, or a guided natural-ice tour with local safety expertise such as the Introduction to Ice Skating on Natural Ice on Viator (from $208, 4.7/5 from 43 reviews), which runs only when the ice is safe.

12. Enjoy a Swedish fika and winter food experience

Best for: A relaxed afternoon, food lovers and anyone who wants warm breaks in a day of sightseeing

In December, fika is also how you pace the day. A warm café lets you dry off, recover from the wind and plan the next stretch. Try a saffron bun (lussekatt), a cinnamon bun or a gingerbread biscuit (pepparkaka) with coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

For a structured introduction to Swedish food, choose a guided food walk with several tastings, or book a Christmas buffet for the festive part of the trip. The Guided Swedish Food Walking Tour in Södermalm costs from $116 and is rated 4.8/5, but from only 41 reviews. Check which food, drinks and dietary options are included, and remember that an ordinary food tour is not a Christmas-themed one.

A realistic 3-day Stockholm itinerary for December 2026

This itinerary works best 5–20 December, when several seasonal events overlap. It does not count on clear weather, snow or museums opening on Christmas Day.

Day 1: Gamla Stan, waterfront and Christmas lights

Morning (about 9:30–12:00): Explore Gamla Stan, with a guide if you want the history. See Stortorget, wander the surrounding streets and take a short waterfront walk while it is light.

Lunch and early afternoon (12:00–15:00): Lunch and fika, then browse the Stortorget Christmas market if it is open on your dates. If it is raining or bitterly windy, choose a museum instead.

Late afternoon (from about 16:00): Walk through the #Stockholmsjul displays. From 5 to 13 December, swap in or add a Nobel Week Lights route using the official map.

Evening: Dinner in central Stockholm. Keep the first day flexible in case your arrival is delayed.

Day 2: Winter boat tour and Djurgården

Morning (10:30 or noon): Take the 75-minute winter boat tour, ideally a sailing that finishes while it is still light. Get to the quay early for boarding and follow the operator’s cold-weather advice.

Early afternoon: Go to Djurgården for lunch. Choose the Vasa Museum, Nordiska museet or ABBA The Museum, depending on your interests.

Late afternoon and evening: Head back to the centre for a relaxed dinner. If you want a festive meal, a booked julbord cruise can replace the evening plan, though it makes for a long day.

Day 3: Skansen, Lucia or a flexible city day

On a Friday, Saturday or Sunday before 21 December: Spend the morning and early afternoon at Skansen’s Christmas market, with time for the historic buildings and seasonal activities. On 12–13 December, consider booking a Lucia performance in place of another activity.

If Skansen’s market is closed that day: Use the day for a second museum, a food tour, a winter walk or a kayaking trip. Kayaking outside the centre can take most of the day once you add the travel.

Evening: Go back for any lights you missed, or have an early night instead of forcing another chilly walk.

Travelling 24–26 December? Use a different itinerary

Do not reuse the three-day plan over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The Old Town market closes on 23 December, the Skansen market ends on 20 December, and the Vasa Museum is closed on 24–25 December. Plan an easy self-guided walk instead, confirm one or two open attractions and reserve your meals in advance.

The next section lists the holiday hours we found.

What’s open in Stockholm on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2026?

In Sweden, 24 December (Christmas Eve) is the main family celebration. Attractions, shops and restaurants may cut their hours or close, and tours run holiday schedules. 25 December (Christmas Day) is also quiet; more places reopen on 26 December.

These are the official 2026 hours published by early November:

AttractionThu 24 DecFri 25 DecSat 26 Dec

NationalmuseumClosedClosed11:00–17:00

Sources: Skansen official hours, ABBA The Museum, Vasa Museum, Nationalmuseum. Check the official calendar again just before you travel.

On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, go to Skansen or ABBA early, take a gentle walk through the decorated streets and have a pre-booked Christmas meal; do not expect to walk into a restaurant for a julbord without a reservation. Some Christmas cruises sail on 25 December, but check that date’s departures specifically. From 26 December museums are easier to combine, with the Vasa Museum and Nationalmuseum open again. For transport on public holidays, use the official SL journey planner, not weekday travel times.

How to get around Stockholm in December

The central sights are fairly close together, but public transport saves you from wind and icy pavements.

  • Metro (Tunnelbana): Convenient for Gamla Stan, the centre and connections to attractions.
  • Tram 7: Handy for Djurgården and Skansen; check current service notices.
  • Buses: Useful for neighbourhoods and sights farther from the centre.
  • Ferries: Scenic, but not every summer route or timetable runs the same way in winter. Check the service and whether your ticket is valid on it.
  • Walking: Still the best way round Gamla Stan and Norrmalm, but plan shorter outdoor stretches and wear non-slip footwear.

According to SL’s published fares, an adult single journey costs SEK 43 and is valid for 75 minutes. The SL app also sells 24-hour and 72-hour tickets. Prices and route supplements change, so buy for the journeys you will actually make; not every airport or boat transfer is included.

Where to stay for a December trip

Norrmalm, near Stockholm Central: The best all-round base for a short visit, if you arrive by train, or if you want quick access to museums, the Christmas lights and the metro.

Gamla Stan: The most atmospheric base for Old Town walks and photography; expect uneven cobblestones and some historic buildings with lots of stairs.

Östermalm: Stylish hotels, shopping, waterfront walks and easy access towards Djurgården.

Södermalm: A good choice if you prefer cafés, neighbourhood restaurants and a more residential feel. Factor in the journey back after evening events.

For a festive weekend, stay close to the activities you will actually book; being near a summer ferry terminal helps little in December.

How much does a December weekend in Stockholm cost?

Costs vary a lot with hotel category, dates and where you eat. Budget by what you plan to do instead of relying on one average weekend figure:

ExpenseExample amount
Free sightseeingChristmas lights and Nobel Week Lights: free
Vasa Museum adult ticketSEK 195 at the October–December 2026 rate
Strömma Winter Boat TourFrom SEK 410
Christmas buffet lunch cruiseFrom SEK 795
Christmas buffet dinner cruiseFrom SEK 995
SL adult single journeySEK 43
Food, cafés and hotelVaries widely; compare live prices for your dates

These are examples, not a package quote, using the rates published in November 2026. The bigger choice is between one premium experience, such as a julbord cruise, and several smaller tickets. On a budget, the free lights, the Old Town streets and one excellent museum still make a rewarding two-day trip.

Is a city pass worth it in December? Only if the attractions you will visit are included, open on your dates and reachable in the hours you have. Summer-only sightseeing cruises will not save you anything in midwinter. The Stockholm Pass costs from $108 and is rated 4.1/5 from 2,528 reviews; add up the separate tickets first and compare.

Stockholm in early December vs Christmas week vs New Year’s Eve

Early December (1–13): My overall pick for atmosphere. You get the markets, the lights, the winter boat and, from 5 to 13 December, Nobel Week Lights, with Lucia events on 12–13 December.

Mid-December (14–20): Best if your priority is Christmas shopping, decorations, festive meals and Skansen’s final market weekend. Book your hotel and Christmas dinners as early as you can.

Christmas week (21–26): A lovely, quiet trip, but not the easiest for spontaneous sightseeing. It suits visitors who like a slower pace and are happy to reserve meals and confirm holiday hours.

After Christmas (27–31): The lights stay on, many museums reopen, and you can sightsee without depending on an Advent market. New Year’s Eve events have their own availability and admission rules; check each one instead of assuming a cruise or fireworks spot.

Common mistakes when visiting Stockholm in December

Expecting every Christmas market to run daily. Skansen’s stalls open on set weekends, and smaller markets may be one-day events. Check the dates before planning a day around one.

Assuming snow is certain. It can be wet or snow-free. Pack footwear for rain, slush and ice, not only for deep snow.

Booking a late-afternoon boat for daylight views. A 13:45 departure can overlap with sunset; choose an earlier sailing if clear scenery matters most.

Arriving on Christmas Day expecting normal museum hours. Holiday hours differ by venue. The Vasa Museum, for example, is closed on 24 and 25 December.

Trying to fit the whole archipelago into a short December day. Winter ferry timetables are thinner than summer’s, and the daylight window is narrow. A compact sightseeing cruise suits a first visit better.

Treating icebreaking, snow or natural skating ice as guaranteed. They all depend on conditions, even when winter activities are advertised.

Overloading evenings. The Christmas lights are wonderful, but a long wait outside in wet wind soon gets uncomfortable. Plan café and restaurant breaks.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stockholm worth visiting in December?

Yes, especially for the Christmas lights, Swedish traditions, museums, food and the winter atmosphere. It suits you less if your main goals are long daylight hikes or warm-weather island-hopping. Two or three days is a good starting point.

Is Stockholm too dark in December?

Not if you plan around it. There are about six hours of daylight near the solstice, with sunset around 2:45–3:00 pm. Save outdoor sightseeing for late morning and early afternoon, and keep museums, lights, concerts and dinner for later.

Does Stockholm get snow in December?

Sometimes, but snow cover is not guaranteed. Conditions range from frozen or snowy to rainy and slushy. Choose activities that work without snow, and bring warm waterproof footwear.

What is the temperature in Stockholm in December?

The long-term averages are about 2.5°C for the daily high and -1.2°C for the daily low. The weather on your trip may be much warmer or colder, and wind makes it feel colder.

Are Stockholm Christmas markets open on Christmas Day?

Do not count on it. The main Old Town market is expected to close on 23 December 2026, and Skansen’s Christmas market ends on 20 December. Some attractions stay open over Christmas, but the market stalls do not.

What is the best time in December to visit Stockholm?

5–13 December 2026 combines the Christmas markets, the festive lights, Nobel Week Lights and Lucia events. If Skansen’s market matters to you, make sure your dates include a Friday, Saturday or Sunday before 21 December.

Can you take a boat tour in Stockholm in December?

Yes. Strömma runs a dedicated winter sightseeing tour daily from 1 December 2026, with indoor seating and live commentary. Christmas dining cruises also sail in December. Check your exact departure and the rules for cancellation or weather disruption.

Is the Stockholm winter boat tour guaranteed to break ice?

No. The boat can sail in icy conditions, but actual icebreaking depends on the weather and the sea. Book it as a scenic waterfront and inner-archipelago cruise.

What is there to do in Stockholm on December 24 or 25?

Visit attractions with confirmed holiday hours, such as Skansen and ABBA The Museum, take a self-guided walk through the city and have a pre-booked meal. The Vasa Museum and Nationalmuseum are closed on both dates. Do not rely on normal shop hours or walk-in restaurant tables.

Can I see the Northern Lights from Stockholm in December?

Auroras are occasionally visible during strong geomagnetic activity on clear, dark nights, but Stockholm is not a reliable aurora destination. If the northern lights are a main goal, plan a separate trip to northern Sweden.

Is Stockholm good for families in December?

Yes, with the right mix of indoor and outdoor stops. Skansen, ABBA The Museum, the Vasa Museum, the decorations and the city-centre skating rink can all work well, depending on opening hours and your children’s interests. Avoid a long outdoor evening in freezing wind with young children.

Should I buy the Stockholm city pass for a December visit?

Add up your planned tickets first. A pass can pay off on a museum-heavy trip, but some boat trips change with the season. Work from the current list of included attractions and their opening calendars, not from the number of attractions advertised for summer.

Final verdict: should you book Stockholm in December 2026?

Stockholm in December is worth the trip if you enjoy festive streets, winter culture, good museums and slower sightseeing. The trade-off is short daylight and unpredictable weather, but there is no shortage of things to do.

For the best balance, visit between 5 and 20 December, book one signature winter activity, keep a museum as your bad-weather option and leave room for the Christmas lights after dark. If you are visiting over 24–26 December, keep the plan flexible and check holiday hours before booking restaurants or tours.
